Being the capital, Dhaka is busiest of all the cities in the country. Commuters of the city have been suffering for the past few months due to the common scenario of road digging due to various purposes by several government departments like Water and Sewerage Authority (WASA), City Corporation (CC) and Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC).
Banani is one of the areas facing this problem. Rafiqul Islam, a resident of the area, says, ‘The digging usually begins around rainy season. Most of the roads in Bananihavesuffered due to this reason. Where walking is difficult, how can I think about moving by car? It’s painful to reach office, drop my child to school and do other daily activities. The issue has also intensified the traffic congestion in this area’.
Besides Banani, the other areas facing the problem include Mohakhali, Gulshan, Baridhara, Notun Bazaar, North Badda, Middle Badda, Moghbazar, Banglamotor, Dhanmondi, Jigatola among others.
Trail-of-suffering2Besides the portion of roads being dug, the other parts of the roads are occupied by large pipes or construction materials thus increasing traffic congestion.
A road worker Abdul Malek, who was working near Mohakhali, tells New Age Xtra, ‘We will cut the road and place the pipes. Another team will connect the individual households to the main line. After that the road will be filled with soil and sand by another team.’
It can be understood that the sufferings of citizens in these areas will continue at least for another month or two.
