Once upon a time, not very long ago, flowers were not considered agricultural products in Bangladesh. However, due to the huge demand of flowers, the country often used to import a substantial amount of flowers every year. There were some who cultivated flowers in their backyards or on their rooftops. But in recent days, flower cultivation in the country has seen a boost, with the local flower sector becoming around Tk 850 crore.
Currently in Bangladesh more than 30 varieties of flowers are being cultivated in about 12,000 acres of land in 24 districts. Recently, from March 30 to April 1, the Bangladesh Flower Society organised a three day long flower fest at Bangla Academy, with an aim to represent the flower market and its potential in contributing significantly to the country’s economy.
