Rickshaw decoration

Text by Muhammad Ibrahim Ibne Towhid

The history of cinema banner painting is deeply related to the emergence, development and evolution of films in Bangladesh. The artworks travel back to the times when commercial screenings of films had just begun and cinema halls were being constructed.

The colourful rickshaw ornamentation through cinema banners had added additional dimension to the urban scenic beauty in the country around the seventies till the late nineties. The tired and anxious passerby, while on the road, stuck in terrible traffic congestions, still have the opportunity to savour the beauty of the ornate rickshaws plying as movable display of popular taste.

The photos in this section show the works of the popular cinema banner artist Mohammad Hanif Pappu.
